The pride of Peru in London, Coya has it all: music, art, a range of menus, a Pisco bar and even tiered membership options

Don’t go to Coya if you are feeling indecisive: it is a haven of possibilities, a glamorous warren of different rooms, menus, experiences and even membership levels.

The restaurant’s devotion to Peruvian food and drink is obvious and it offers a gorgeous Pisco bar and a range of cocktails made from the south American grape brandy but also an impressive list of other cocktails as well.

The night HotJoint visited there was an extremely warm welcome and we decided that knocking back a cocktail or two at the bar was the best place to take in the glamourous surroundings and even more glamorous guests.

Coya ceviche

The interior matches the modern with the traditional with high ceilings and polished wood, earthy warm colours and a mix of textures. The low lighting in the evening makes for a very intimate atmosphere.

Gazing upon the classy Mayfair joint you can’t help but think of the tiny Ceviche restaurant that blazed a trail for Peruvian cuisine in London not so long ago and be amazed by where Coya has taken it.

The menu offers a range of Peruvian and South American motifs – white corn, lots of fish, quinoa, coriander, jalapeno, chimichurri – but with its head up and a few refences to the Far East.

The tasting menu – HotJoint’s choice – was similarly vibrant, colourful and delicious. It began with a succession of ceviches to be eaten in a certain order based on spiciness. After the octopus, corn and chicken, the steak, spiked with anise and served with crisp shallots, was a standout moment.

The Pisco sours are of course right on point and there is a wine list that would take a day to read replete with wines from around the world with a number from South America.

With its cigars on offer, tiered private members offering and pre-theatre menu, Coya has just about thought of everything. It is a great place to impress business associates, catch up with family for a special night and certainly ideal for a date. Peru must be very proud.
